About the Book

I didn’t set out to write a memoir. Things got out of hand.

Some families pass down recipes. Mine passed down material.

This is a memoir about growing up, screwing up, loving people, losing people, becoming a father, losing a father, and realizing that self-awareness usually shows up a few years late.

No lessons were learned in the order presented.

Some people may remember it differently.

I was mostly trying to explain myself.

Meet Brandon

An Excerpt

My son is twelve.

He’s going quiet the way they do. Becoming a whole person in a room I keep getting locked out of. Answering in syllables. Closing a laptop when I come in, not because there’s anything on it, but because it’s his.

It isn’t giving up. It’s just how far away they drift while you’re still standing right there. Loving them completely. In the hallway. Not knowing which word to underline.

Here is the story. Read it or don’t. I’ve already embarrassed myself either way.
